Research now indicates that simple precautions involving a baby's crib mattress and bedding can prevent crib death (SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
CAUSE OF CRIB DEATH
Two highly qualified scientists (one in New Zealand and the other in the UK) have proved that the cause of SIDS is not medical – it is environmental. Furthermore, they have shown that there is only one cause of SIDS.
New Zealand scientist Jim Sprott and British scientist Barry Richardson state that SIDS is caused by environmental gaseous poisoning. Sprott proposed this cause in 1986, and in 1988 Richardson proved the generation of highly toxic nerve gases from crib mattresses.
The toxic gases are phosphines, arsines and stibines, which are formed by the action of common household fungi on compounds of phosphorus, arsenic and antimony in crib mattresses (and other bedding). Phosphorus, arsenic and/or antimony are frequently present in mattresses (e.g. incorporated as flame retardant or naturally present in components such as coconut fibre and kapok).
Phosphines, arsines and stibines are anticholinesterase agents: they prevent the transmission of nerve impulses to the baby’s heart and lungs, thereby resulting in death.
SOLUTION
Babies can be protected from this gaseous poisoning by enclosing mattresses in a gas-impermeable cover which is itself not capable of the gas generation concerned, and using on top of the wrapped mattress specified bedding which is also not capable of that gas generation.
“Mattress-wrapping for crib death prevention” has been publicised nationwide in New Zealand since 1995. From 1995 through December 2007, 170,000(1) New Zealand babies have slept on mattresses wrapped in specially formulated slip-on polyethylene mattress covers. These mattress covers (which were designed by Dr Sprott and are called BabeSafe covers) are now in use in a number of countries other than New Zealand.
There has been no reported crib death – anywhere in the world – on any mattress wrapped in accordance with Dr Sprott’s mattress-wrapping protocol.
